The Friends of Gallows Hill are hoping to establish a Community Orchard over the next several years, on part of area E. The orchard trees will be various varieties of apples and pears. We started planting in February 2016.
A section of the orchard, approximately one-sixth of an acre, will be managed as a forest garden. Forest gardens feature a diverse range of edible and otherwise useful trees, shrubs and perennial plants. More information on forest gardening can be found here.
The area is currently overgrown with nettles and thistles. So that the forest garden plants can become established without being overrun, part of the area will be mulched each year with cardboard covered with a thick layer of wood chip. This will be removed gradually and a groundcover planted.
